Rabies vaccine
Students enrolling in the Algonquin veterinary assistant and veterinary technician programs and the Collège Boréal Veterinary Care Technician program are required to complete their rabies immunization before beginning studies. Here are the necessary steps:
1. Receive three doses of rabies vaccine over the course of three weeks
2. Wait a further three weeks
3. Get a blood test (serology) to check if you are now properly protected against rabies
4. Wait a further one to three weeks for the result of the blood test to arrive
Most people's test will show a protective antibody titre. A few will not. In that case, steps one to four will be repeated though often one additional dose only will be given and re-testing done.
Our clinic provides you with your own rabies vaccine concierge, Alissa. She is our staffperson assigned to assist you. You can ask her questions or have her book your appointment by calling or texting her at 613-406-2879. Or, you can call us directly at 613-733-5553 to make an appointment at either our Riverside clinic (daytime hours) and Barrhaven clinic (evening hours). Unfortunately online booking is not available for these appointments.
We provide the documentation you need - proof that you received the vaccines at the correct intervals and the results of serology testing. For students who have not had tetanus vaccine in the previous 10 years, we will administer that since it is required by the program as well.
The cost is $195 for rabies vaccine (expensive but reduced for Algonquin and Boréal students in these programs) plus $30 (visit and documentation fee) payable at each of the three visits. There is no charge for the tetanus injection nor for the subsequent lab work. Payment can be made with credit card, debit card or cash at the time of each visit.
The second dose is given one week after the first. The third dose is given two weeks after the second. It is important that rabies vaccine be given according to the recommended schedule.
